Message from Mrs. Catherine O'Kane
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we approach the final days of first term, with the promise of Easter on the horizon and the welcome pause of the school holidays soon upon us, we are invited into a sacred time of reflection. The events of Holy Week draw us deeply into the heart of our faith—the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. In the Church’s Jubilee Year of Hope, we are called not only to remember the hope we find in the Risen Christ but to become bearers of that hope in our daily lives. This call echoes powerfully within our 2025 school theme, Ignite Hope with Compassionate Hearts, reminding us that it is often in the small, quiet gestures of love and compassion that the light of hope flickers and grows.
Easter is not just a celebration of new life; it is a profound reminder that love triumphs over fear, light over darkness, and hope over despair. The Resurrection of Christ offers us a lens through which to view the world—not with cynicism or defeat, but with faith in what can be transformed. In our own school community, we witness glimpses of this transformation daily: in the resilience of our students, in the selflessness of our parent and caregivers who volunteer to support our many programs and initiatives, and in the unwavering dedication of our staff. As we prepare for the Easter season, may we be renewed by the hope of the Risen Christ and continue to be courageous signs of God’s mercy and compassion in the lives of others.
Red Bow Month and Muscular Dystrophy Queensland
For 32 years, our school has stood alongside Muscular Dystrophy Queensland, embodying our school value of service through unwavering commitment to those living with neuromuscular conditions. Our annual Year 11 Red Bow Day event is more than just a fundraiser—it is a testament to the compassionate hearts of our students, who actively contribute to providing essential equipment, services, and support for individuals facing significant daily challenges through their CBD fundraising. This year, our Year 11 students once again led this initiative with energy and empathy, raising over $17,000 and awareness to inspire hope for those living with degenerative muscular diseases.
It was a privilege to attend an event at Queensland Government House this week to acknowledge the extraordinary work of Muscular Dystrophy Queensland (MDQld) and the impact of our long-standing partnership. It is very humbling that our collective efforts have been nominated by MDQld for the Queensland Philanthropy Awards—a recognition of the generosity, advocacy, and action that define our school community. This nomination is not just about what we have given; it is a celebration of the way our students live our 2025 school theme Inspire Hope with Compassionate Hearts, using their time, and energy to support those experiencing challenges.
Term One
Term One has been filled with energy, spirit and achievement across our extensive co-curricular program. From early morning training sessions in the pool and after-school rehearsals in the music rooms, to debating rounds, and lively lunchtimes filled with Mercy Action initiatives, our students have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into every opportunity. Whether performing, competing, leading or supporting, their enthusiasm and commitment reflect the vibrant life of our school and the many pathways through which our girls can flourish.
A sincere thank you to all the PSGs and our dedicated parents, caregivers and spectators for your unwavering support. It is truly appreciated by your daughters and our entire school community. A special thank you also to the dedicated staff, ensemble leaders and coaches who generously give their time and expertise to make these richly rewarding experiences possible.
Alongside these co-curricular endeavours, our students have also approached their academic studies with diligence and focus. Over the past few weeks, students across all year levels have been completing assessment tasks and preparing for examinations, with our Year 5, 7 and 9 students also participating in NAPLAN testing. As the term draws to a close, I hope all students can take pride in their efforts and achievements and look forward to a well-earned rest over the Easter break.
A highlight of Term One for me has been my meetings with our Year 7 students, who have come as part of their Religious Education classes to meet me in my office. The girls come ready with a diverse range of questions, although there are definitely some questions that everyone wants to know the answer to!
These are:
Q: “Mrs O'Kane, what House are you in? ”
A: “I’m in no House and also in every House.”
Q: “Mrs O'Kane, what’s your favourite House?”
A: “I don’t have a favourite House – I love them all equally!”
It has been such a joy to meet with our Year 7 students and to see them settling into their secondary years so well. I am so appreciative of the work of our Year 12 students as their “buddies” in ensuring that the start of the year has seen this transition happen so smoothly.
Easter Holiday Tours
Over the break, we have a number of national and international tours occurring, and I invite you to follow the Italian Study Tour to Italy and the Physics Tour to Canberra and Sydney on our AHSTours Instagram channel. Both experiences provide outstanding opportunities for our students of Italian and Physics to put their skills and talents into practice and to broaden their understanding and knowledge. I am so appreciative of our staff for giving generously of their time to make these opportunities for our students possible.
End of Term
Next Friday, our whole school will come together for the final time in Term One to celebrate our Easter liturgy. We will give thanks for our school community and for the gift of unconditional love embodied in the Risen Christ.
Lord Jesus, the mystery of your cross is at the heart of our lives.
Help us embrace the world as you did.
Give us the perseverance we need to make our world a better place.
Your kingdom come, your will be done.
I pray that you and your family will enjoy the blessings of a happy and holy Easter. Travel safely, and enjoy your time of rest and reflection.
