A Message from Mrs Catherine O'Kane
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we begin a hope-filled new school year, we delight in the return of familiar faces, the rekindling of friendships, and the beginnings of many new connections within our community.
The start of the year is always a time of renewed energy and possibility, as we look ahead to all that we will learn, experience and achieve together. In 2026, this sense of anticipation is deepened as we mark a very special milestone, the 165th anniversary of our school. It is a moment to honour our rich Mercy heritage, to give thanks for the Sisters of Mercy and the generations who have shaped our story, and to recommit ourselves to the values that continue to guide us.
As our community reunites, the respect and shared mission, vision and values that guide us are once again palpable. It is a privilege to begin this significant year together, grounded in our past and inspired by all that lies ahead.
New Students and Staff
Last Tuesday, we gave a very warm Mercy welcome to our new students and families. Whether beginning in Year 5 or 7 or entering our community at another stage of schooling, we are delighted that you are now part of our All Hallows’ story. One of the great strengths of our school is the way students look out for one another, and I know that our newest students will be met with kindness, care and a genuine sense of belonging.
To support new students and families as you find your way within our community, a range of induction and welcome opportunities are offered. I encourage families to engage with these (you’ll find the dates in the school calendar) as they provide valuable connections and insights into the life of our school. It was a pleasure to meet so many new parents and caregivers at our opening assembly and I extend my sincere thanks to our Mothers’ Network volunteers for their generosity and service in hosting morning tea following the assembly.
We also began the year by welcoming staff back for our Professional Learning Days and greeting the new members of our staff team. We are fortunate to have such dedicated, skilled and compassionate educators and Enterprise staff, all deeply committed to our Mercy charism and to the flourishing of each student. I know our community will extend the same warmth and generosity to our new staff as they take their place within the life of our school.
2026 School Theme – Welcome All with Love and Respect
Our 2026 school theme, Welcome all with Love and Respect, speaks to the very heart of who we are as a Mercy community. It calls us to live with open hearts, generous spirits and a deep commitment to the dignity of every person. Inspired by the life and teaching of Jesus, and by the words and witness of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, this theme invites us to practise hospitality not as a gesture, but as a way of being; one that is attentive, inclusive and grounded in genuine care for others.
Catherine McAuley’s life was shaped by three extraordinary qualities: her innate love and concern for people, her faith-filled conviction that she encountered Christ in every person in need, and her unwavering belief in the possibility of a more just society. These qualities came together powerfully in the House of Mercy at 64A Baggot Street, Dublin, opened in 1827. The iconic red doors of the House of Mercy have become a lasting symbol of Catherine’s open-hearted welcome as the red doors stood open to the poor, the sick and the uneducated, offering shelter, education, companionship and hope. They remind us that love and respect are made real through presence, attentiveness and action.
As Mary Wickham rsm so beautifully writes, “The Door of Mercy rests on the threshold of need… You only have to knock once, and you only have to knock lightly.” Our theme challenges us to ensure that, within our school community, doors are always open to listening deeply, to honouring difference, and to actively creating a place where every person feels known, valued and able to belong. In living Welcome all with Love and Respect, we continue Catherine’s legacy, shaping a community where hospitality is lived daily, and mercy is made visible in our relationships, our learning and our service.
Capital Projects Update
Work has continued over the break on our three current building projects. As can happen on these projects, there have been unforeseen issues and delays that have extended the completion dates by Easter. I have provided some photos below so that you can see how these purpose designed spaces in the Scholars’ Centre and Callaghan Place are taking shape and I know that there will be great excitement in Term 2 when these spaces are ready for use by our students and staff.
Work has also progressed on the Jagera Walk (air bridge) with installation now scheduled for 13 – 15 February. Updates regarding any changes to access via Dodge Lane will be communicated via the School App – if you use Dodge Lane, please ensure that you receive App notifications.
I am very appreciative of the generous donations to the All Hallows’ Foundation Building Fund, which play a vital role in enabling the ongoing development and renewal of our campus. Your generous support ensures that our physical environment continues to reflect our educational vision, honour our Mercy heritage, and meet the needs of both current and future generations of students.
Conclusion
As we begin this new year together, our theme Welcome All with Love and Respect invites us to practise hospitality as a way of life, not simply a kind gesture.
The words from Hebrews 13:2 remind us, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares,” calling us to remain open-hearted, attentive and generous in our encounters with others. In welcoming each person with love and respect, we honour their dignity and recognise the quiet grace present in everyday moments.
In this, our school’s 165th year, I pray that our community continues to be one where doors, hearts and minds remain open, and where mercy is lived through small, faithful acts of care.
God bless,
Mrs. Catherine O’Kane (Principal)
