A Message from Mrs Catherine OKane
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we approach International Women’s Day on 8 March, we do so in a year of particular significance for our community as we celebrate our school’s 165th anniversary. This anniversary invites us to reflect with gratitude and clarity on the progress made toward gender equality and on the enduring purpose that has shaped our school since 1861. From the beginning, our mission has been to educate young women to embrace their future with confidence and self-knowledge, and to make a difference in our world by living Mercy. That commitment, first imagined by Catherine McAuley in Dublin almost 200 years ago and then by our founding Sisters of Mercy here in Brisbane, remains both their legacy and our responsibility as we continue to lead this legacy of Mercy and justice.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, #Give to Gain, speaks powerfully to our Mercy tradition. Catherine McAuley understood nearly two centuries ago that “No work of Charity can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women.” When we invest in women, when we support one another with courage and compassion, the whole world gains. Across our faith life, curriculum, cocurricular programs and social justice initiatives, we seek to form AHSisters who know their worth, who stand with integrity, and who lead for and with others. In doing so, we honour our past and step with hope into a future shaped by justice, joy and service.

I look forward to gathering tomorrow morning with our community at the Past Pupils’ Association’s annual International Women’s Day Breakfast and to celebrating this important occasion together. I also extend my sincere thanks to our Past Pupils’ Association President, Claire Cummins, the Executive, the organising team, guest speakers and our generous sponsors for their leadership and commitment in bringing this annual highlight to life.
New Strategic Plan
I am very excited to introduce to our community our new 2026 - 2030 Strategic Plan, Empowering Extraordinary Futures (see here on the school website). Inspired by Catherine McAuley’s call to “strive to do ordinary things extraordinarily well,” this plan both honours our rich Mercy heritage and positions us with clarity and confidence for the years ahead. It has been shaped by consultation, reflection and a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges emerging in a rapidly changing world. Grounded in our enduring values of respect, integrity, compassion, joy, justice and service, it sets a confident course for the next chapter of our shared journey.
Structured around five pillars, Faith and Mercy, Our Students, Our Staff, Our Community and Stewardship, the plan articulates what “extraordinary” will look like in 2030. It commits us to deepening formation in faith, strengthening contemporary and evidence informed learning, enhancing student wellbeing, fostering a thriving professional culture for staff and stewarding our resources with foresight and sustainability. More than a roadmap, it is an invitation to walk together with purpose, hope and courage, confident that by attending carefully to the work before us each day, we will empower truly extraordinary futures for our AHSisters.
School Board meeting and AGMs
On Saturday 21 February, our School Board and Leadership Team gathered for our annual full day retreat, a significant time set aside for reflection, discernment and future planning. This year’s retreat centred on the implementation of our newly launched 2026 - 2030 Strategic Plan and the responsibilities that now flow from it. It was a rich and thoughtful day of dialogue, grounded in prayer and shaped by a shared commitment to wise stewardship, strong governance and faith-filled leadership. Opportunities such as this allow the Board to step back from regular business and attend carefully to the long term direction of the school, always with the wellbeing and flourishing of our students at heart.
We are deeply blessed to be supported by a Board of highly skilled and generous professionals who offer their time and expertise in service of our community. In late March, the School Board will hold its Annual General Meeting, attended by Directors from our canonical sponsor, Mercy Partners. Our Foundation Board will also meet for its AGM, continuing its important work in advancing the mission of the school, particularly through support of the Catherine McAuley Bursary Fund and the Foundation Building Fund. I remain sincerely grateful for the integrity, wisdom and generosity of all our Board Directors and committee members whose dedicated service greatly strengthens the ongoing development of our school.
Open Day thanks
My sincere thanks to our staff, students and the many generous parent volunteers from our P&F Association, Mothers’ Network, Parent Support Groups and our Past Pupils’ Association who so warmly welcomed prospective families to Open Day on Tuesday. With close to 2000 visitors on campus, it was a joyful and energetic afternoon that reflected the pride we hold in our school and the strength of our community.
Finally, I warmly invite all parents and caregivers to join us for our Inaugural Mass at 1.00 pm on Monday, 9 March at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This significant liturgical celebration brings our whole community together in prayer and gratitude as we “Welcome all with Love and Respect”.
May God bless our All Hallows’ community in the coming weeks.
Mrs Catherine O’Kane (Principal)
