A message from Ms Carolyn Liddy
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Last Monday’s Inaugural Mass was a wonderful opportunity for our school community to gather, celebrate, and reflect. The tradition of clapping in and welcoming our new students to the AHSisterhood is always a special way to begin our school year.
We were blessed that so many community members could join us at this special event, including members of the Sisters of Mercy Congregation Leadership Team, Sisters of Mercy, representatives from Mercy Partners, our School Board and Foundation Board, and past Principals. We were especially pleased to welcome such large numbers of parents, caregivers and family members. It is truly wonderful to be able to gather together as a community in the one space to celebrate together and mark the beginning of another wonderful year. We are also very grateful to Fr Peter Dillon, who celebrated Mass with us.
This event would not have been possible without the hard work of many, including our Dean of Mission, Mrs Claire Easton, Head of Mercy Charism, Ms Ashley Prisk, Acting Head of Culture, Ms Annabelle Kemish, our Community Relations and Development Team, the IT and Facilities Teams, Operations Manager, Ms Louise Hiscox, and the Operations Team.
Our Inaugural Mass was also an opportunity to honour nine very special educators celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. Ms Mary Childs, Head of Department English; Mrs Cathy Clem, Archivist; Mrs Jill Goan, Admin Assistant Technology; Ms Karen Lewis, Curriculum Leader English; Ms Tina Pond, Year 5 Teacher; and Mrs Jill Volkman, Inclusive Learning Teacher Aide, are celebrating 20 years of dedicated service. We were also thrilled to recognise the remarkable 30 years of service to our AHS community by Ms Melissa Dineen, Director of Strings; Dr Kate Hall, Head of House Tighe; and Mr John Pembroke, Director of Information Services and Technology.
We are truly blessed at All Hallows’ to benefit from such an exceptional staff dedicated to the education of our students and the enthusiastic applause and recognition of these staff members was a small indication of just how appreciated these staff members are.
Performing Arts Showcase
All Hallows’ prides itself on the multiple opportunities we provide our students to not only grow as a learner but also to grow through participation in a multitude of activities including Mercy Action, sporting and cultural programs, as well as retreats, camps, and year level days out and “House nights in”. By embracing these many opportunities and participating fully in available programs we are pleased to see each student gain new skills, broaden their social networks and grow in connection, resilience and confidence.
One outstanding event in our school calendar is the Performing Arts Showcase Day which occurred last Sunday, 15 March. Throughout this day, our many ensembles performed to a packed Claver Theatre. Congratulations to our Acting Head of Culture, Ms Annabelle Kemish and all Performing Arts Directors and tutors for their work to prepare for this day. Special recognition is deserved by every one of our students who performed throughout the day; it is both exciting and nerve-wracking to perform in front of an audience and I am sure our students were most appreciative of the support from their family and friends. A very big thank you to our Performing Arts Parents Support Group who worked tirelessly throughout the day to keep everyone fed and created a terrific festival atmosphere in the Piazza for our whole community to enjoy.
A joyful moment for me this year was to hear one of Ms Jones’ ensembles rehearse Pachelbel’s Canon on the verandah of Main Building outside the Music Library last week. Hearing this magnificent piece of music waft across the Terrace early last Wednesday morning was the perfect reminder to me of what an amazing place AHS is.
Years 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN Testing
Today marks the completion of testing for the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for our Year 5, 7 and 9 students. Congratulations to all our students who have completed these tests across the last two weeks. The online testing environment requires technical and organisational capabilities in addition to traditional literacy and numeracy skills and our students have demonstrated they are more than ready to meet these challenges.
This national initiative allows parents and we, as educators, to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time — individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.
I am most grateful for the dedication and expertise of our Enterprise and Teaching staff who ensured that multiple online testing could occur in different locations across the school. Our dedicated staff attended training sessions, conducted practice tests with students to familiarise them with the format of each test, and ensured that the testing environment in each location across the school was appropriate.
While NAPLAN results are one measure of each learner’s growth, our teaching staff utilise a variety of evaluation tools throughout the year and across the various facets of our holistic education programs to provide a comprehensive summary of your child’s learning progress.
St Patrick’s Day and Loretto House Mass
This week we have celebrated St Patrick’s Day and we were also blessed to have our Loretto House Mass yesterday. It was wonderful to welcome so many family members to celebrate with us in our beautiful Chapel. In his homily, Fr Will Aupito encouraged us to be “heralds of welcome” such an inspiring turn of phrase in keeping with our 2026 school theme Welcome All with Love and Respect and the Loretto House Mass theme United in Spirit, Alive in Action.
If you have been lucky enough to spend time in our Chapel, you might remember the beautiful images of angels above the altar, trumpets in hand. May these beautiful words and images inspire us all in the coming days.
I leave you with the words from the beautiful prayer known as St Patrick’s Breastplate:
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
May God bless you and your family in the week ahead.
