A Message from Mrs Catherine O'Kane
Dear Parents and Caregivers
In a school as event-filled and purposeful as ours, there is always a great deal happening, and it can be tempting to measure our days only by what has been completed, achieved, or performed. Yet the deeper work of education is often quieter. It is found in the habits we build, the ways we learn to respond to challenges, and the relationships that hold us steady when things feel demanding. In 2026, our school theme, Welcome all with Love and Respect, invites us to keep returning to this question: what kind of community are we forming, and how are we treating one another as we strive, learn, and grow together? This fortnight, there are many moments across school life that speak to this purpose.
Scholars’ Centre and Community Generosity
I am delighted to share that the Scholars’ Centre is now open and will serve as a dedicated examination hub, supporting focused learning and academic excellence. In contemporary schooling, assessment is increasingly spread across the year and across different formats, and it is important that our students have spaces and routines that help them approach these moments with confidence and calm. The Scholars’ Centre is a practical response to these needs, improving the exam experience for all students and collocating the exam spaces for students requiring assessment adjustment arrangements. Additionally, this dedicated assessment centre also enhances supervision and scheduling operations, providing other benefits for students and staff across our learning programs.
This new facility also sits within All Hallows’ long tradition of scholarship and of creating spaces that support our students as learners. We want our students to know that academic effort matters, that careful preparation is valued, and that they belong in the full life of learning, inquiry, and academic goal setting.
The creation of the Scholars’ Centre is only possible through the generosity of our All Hallows’ community. I would like to thank the All Hallows’ Foundation for their donation of $750,000 towards the current capital projects of the Scholars’ Centre, the Jagera Walk and Callaghan Place and the Mothers’ Network for their very generous $100,000 donation towards the furnishing of the Scholars’ Centre. These donations, made possible by the generosity and service of our community, are a significant contribution to a space that builds on the many outstanding initiatives to support the highest standards of scholarship for young women that our school has championed for 165 years and that this outstanding new facility will serve our students for years to come.
Community Life and Co-curricular Highlights
The winter sport season has commenced with enthusiasm and positive energy, and it has been wonderful to see our students representing the School with determination, teamwork and in the spirit of respect for all. With all of our winter club sports and the Term 2 CaSSSA sports in action, we wish all participating students well for the season. This Saturday, our rowing community will gather in the Jane Street Shed for the annual Blessing of the Fleet and the announcement of this year’s shed theme, setting goals for the season ahead.
This week will see the culmination of many months of hard work as All Hallows’ School, together with St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, presents the 2026 Joint Production, Jersey Boys, from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 May. I always enjoy attending the performance, and I am very much looking forward to sharing the excitement with our community as we celebrate the creativity, collaboration and dedication of our students. Chookas to all involved for a wonderful series of performances!
May Morning Tea is a highlight on our community calendar, bringing together past and current parents and caregivers, as well as many past pupils. This annual highlight will be held tomorrow, Friday 8 May, and I would like to thank Justine Douglas (Mothers’ Network President), Kerrie Taylor (May Morning Tea Coordinator), Rachel Mealey (Emcee), and the many, many other dedicated volunteers whose hard work makes this treasured event possible. I look forward to sharing this wonderful morning with our extended All Hallows’ community in the spirit of Mercy.
Foundation Day
Foundation Day invites us to look back with gratitude and to reflect on the faith, dedication and inspiring service given by the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane Congregation over the past 165 years. This day celebrates the arrival on 10 May 1861, of Mother Vincent Whitty and her five companion Sisters of Mercy, here in Brisbane. Within days, the Sisters had established their first ministry, within months their first school and in December 1861, All Hallows’ School commenced. On Foundation Day, we honour the Sisters of Mercy whose courage and vision formed our community, and we give thanks for the many staff and students across generations who have carried the story and spirit of Mercy forward.
Mother’s Day
In the life of a school, some days invite us to pause and notice the quiet, steadfast love that sits behind so much of what our young people are able to achieve and become. As we approach Mother’s Day on Sunday 10 May, we have an opportunity to honour the love, care and presence that nurture our students’ lives. We give thanks for mothers, carers and significant women role models who walk alongside our students with generosity and commitment. We also hold in our hearts those students and families who have lost a mother figure in the past year or for whom this day may be complex, recognising that care and love take many forms within our community.
As May is the month of Mary, a special time to honour our Blessed Mother, I leave you with these words of prayer for all mothers and mother-figures in our community in the coming week:
May God reward you for the many ways you love,
for choosing wisely, for accepting openly, for giving freely,
and for teaching, encouraging, and redirecting patiently.
May Mary make your memories as joyful as you keep them in your heart
and may she gain for you every blessing from Jesus, her Son.
Amen
May God bless our All Hallows’ School community in the weeks ahead.
Mrs Catherine O’Kane (Principal)
