Message from Ms. Carolyn Liddy
As we approach St Patrick’s Day this coming Monday, it is fitting to reflect on the courage and faith of St Patrick, a figure who stands as a beacon of perseverance and unwavering trust in God. St Patrick, kidnapped and sold into slavery as a young man, found the strength to escape and return to his homeland. Yet, it was his return to Ireland, driven by a calling to spread the Christian faith, that truly exemplified his bravery. Despite facing hostility and unimaginable hardships, St Patrick's dedication never wavered. His life was a testament to the power of faith and the impact of steadfast resolve.
In the wake of the extraordinary weather we have experienced in southeast Queensland, we pray for those members of our community who continue to draw on their own courage and resolve as they endure loss of power and damage to their property. We are very grateful that our beautiful campus sustained minimal water ingress and that we have been able to return to full operations so quickly.
As a result of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we did unfortunately have to postpone two very important community events. I am pleased to remind you that our annual Past Pupils’ Association International Women’s Day breakfast will take place this Friday 14 March.
TC Alfred has also required our dedicated Teaching and Learning Team to reconsider the assessment schedules for all students in Years 5 to 12. Over 40 assessment dates have now been adjusted in order to ensure the learning progress of our students is carefully considered and supported in the coming weeks. All of these changes have been updated in the TASS calendar which is viewable by students in the TASS Student Café and by parents in the TASS Parent Lounge.
Inaugural Mass
Last Monday’s Inaugural Mass was a wonderful opportunity for our school community to gather, celebrate, and reflect. The tradition of clapping in and welcoming our new students to the AHSisterhood is always a special way to begin our school year. Although our celebration was a few weeks later than usual, the joy within the room was both uplifting and infectious!
We were blessed that so many community members could join us at this special event, including members of the Sisters of Mercy Congregation Leadership Team, Sisters of Mercy, representatives from Mercy Partners, our School Board and Foundation Board, past Principals and numerous parents and caregivers. We were especially pleased to be joined by so many of our Past Pupils as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of our Past Pupils’ Association. We are also very grateful to Fr Peter Dillon, who celebrated Mass with us.
This event would not have been possible without the hard work of many, including our Dean of Mission, Mrs Claire Easton, Head of Mercy Charism, Ms Megan Lockwood, Head of Culture, Ms Cathie Neil, our Community Relations and Development Team, the IT and Facilities Teams, the Operations Manager, Ms Louise Hiscox, and the Operations Team.
We thank all those who made it possible for our school community to celebrate the beginning of the 2025 school year and hope you enjoy this short video capturing moments from the Mass, Inaugural Mass 2025 - YouTube.
Our Inaugural Mass was also an opportunity to honour two very special educators celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. Ms Ronel Bothma, Head of Careers and Vocational Education and Ms Amanda Bell from our English Department are both celebrating 20 years of dedicated service.
We are truly blessed at All Hallows’ to benefit from such an exceptional staff dedicated to the education of our students and the enthusiastic applause and recognition of these two staff members was very moving.
NAPLAN
The annual National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced this week. The results of these tests provide valuable information to parents, caregivers, and teachers. We can see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time in these fundamental capabilities. We can also use these results to reflect on our programs and identify areas for improvement.
NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of our assessment and reporting processes. Our Year 5, 7, and 9 students have commenced these tests this week, with all testing due to be completed by the end of next week. I congratulate all of our students in Years 5, 7, and 9 for their involvement in this program. Our Years 7 and 9 students have been exceptionally responsive to all of the instructions they have received about lining up, roll marking, and readiness testing, and completed their first test paper today. Our Year 5s have been so organised, and they will complete their NAPLAN program by the end of this week.
Each year, we welcome new staff members, either on a short-term or permanent basis, to our community. A common reflection I am privileged to hear from new teaching staff is what an amazing learning culture exists at All Hallows’ and how outstanding our students are. I was reminded of this again on Tuesday as we returned to school. I happened to be in Student Services for a short time on Tuesday morning and as many of you know the public transport into the city was quite limited on that day. As students arrived to sign in late, I heard many stories of waiting for the bus for 30 to 40 minutes, squeezing into crowded trains, or having one of their parents drive them in.
My favourite story came from a couple of students who had waited over half an hour for their bus to arrive at Norman Park. When they were still waiting after 40 minutes, they decided to walk to school! Not to give up, turn around, and go home, but to somehow get to school. Eventually, their kind father came and picked them up and brought them to school. To me, this is one small example of our students’ dedication to their learning and great desire to be a part of our community every day.
I leave you today with a beautiful prayer from St Patrick:
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
May God bless you this week.
Ms. Carolyn Liddy (Deputy Principal)
